What Is a 7-Piece RPG Dice Set?

by MarsDice 13 Jun 2026
Metal tower RPG dice set for DND and tabletop games

A standard RPG dice set usually includes seven polyhedral dice. These dice are used in many tabletop role-playing games for ability checks, attacks, damage, random tables, healing, and more. If you are new to tabletop games, the shapes can look unusual at first, but each die has a clear role.

D20: the main decision maker

The twenty-sided die is often the most recognizable RPG die. It is commonly used for ability checks, attack rolls, saving throws, and other moments where the game needs to know whether an action succeeds.

D12: big moments and heavy hits

The twelve-sided die appears less often than the D20, but it is used in certain weapon damage rolls, class features, and game systems. Its shape makes it one of the most satisfying dice to roll.

D10 and percentile D10

A set usually includes one standard D10 and one percentile D10 marked in tens. Together, they can roll numbers from 1 to 100. This is useful for random tables, percentage chances, and certain game mechanics.

D8: common damage and effects

The eight-sided die is often used for weapon damage, spells, healing, and class features. It is one of the most frequently used dice after the D20 and D6.

D6: familiar and versatile

The six-sided die is the classic cube most people already know. In RPGs, it can be used for damage, random results, abilities, and many other systems.

D4: small shape, sharp result

The four-sided die is often used for smaller damage rolls, minor effects, and certain spells. Because its points can feel sharp, it is worth storing and handling it carefully.

Do you need more than one set?

One seven-piece set is enough to start playing many tabletop RPGs. Extra sets are useful when rolling multiple damage dice, sharing with guests, matching dice to different characters, or building a collection by material and color.

Beginner buying tip

For your first set, choose readability before decoration. Clear numbers help you learn faster and keep the table moving. Once you know what you like, you can add heavier, more colorful, or more collectible sets later.
